Personal Style In Action: Ideal Client Meeting outfit

Personal style in action: Working mom client meeting outfit

Personal Style in Action is a series about putting personal style into practice through specific looks for each level of The 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits.

For the last few Work It Wednesdays, we’ve been building outfits out of our favorite clothes, working our way up the 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits.

Work It Wednesdays: Working mom outfit photosNow we’re really getting ready to work it with Level 4, Client Meeting–otherwise known as serious career wear. This is your corporate office look, your interview outfit, your asking-for-a-raise ensemble.

The quickest shortcut to Client Meeting is a suit, of course.

The alternative outfit formula is this: blazer or jacket + dress trouser or skirt + dressy top + heels or very nice flats.

This example from my closet is a combination of the two: I’m wearing two separates that have the appearance of a suit when worn together.

  • Blazer: A one-button style from Ann Taylor. (You really can’t go wrong with Ann Taylor for career wear, can you? Similar here.)
  • Skirt: My newly upgraded pencil skirt, from Banana Republic (similar).
  • Dressy top: This is where I injected a bit of my own personal style into an otherwise quite conservative look. This sleeveless shell from LOFT has a sequined zebra stripe pattern (similar).
  • Heels: For me, a pair of kitten heels are the most comfortable option (similar).

Hmm, maybe I should go ask for a raise now! :)

A great source of outfit ideas is adapting stylish combinations others have already created. One way to do this is to break the source down into outfit components, like this.

This week’s working mom outfit inspiration pieces are

Working mom outfit of the week: A spot of leopard

By IN Personal Style, Work It Wednesdays

Working mom outfit of the week: A spot of leopard

I don’t know why animal prints are ever considered to be part of this or that seasonal trend.

Wear It Wednesdays: Working mom outfit photosThey’re such classics, especially leopard print. (I still maintain that leopard is a neutral!)

Maybe that’s why I have so much of it: short scarves and long scarves, flats and ankle boots.

It works with brights and it works with neutrals and it works with an all-dark palette, like this one.

In fact, the only thing saving me from All Black Syndrome (or All Black and Grey Syndrome, anyway) is a spot of leopard: the cuffs of the booties and the faux jeweled necklace.

  • Fab mamas: How do you wear leopard print? It goes with everything, right?

Blazer: Isaac Mizrahi (similar).
Turtleneck: Mossimo (similar).
Skirt: Gap (similar).
Boots: Aerosoles (similar).
Necklace: Kate Spade “Show Your Spots” (similar).

More Fabulous Fridays: Wrap up your work week with a working mom style treatWho says blazers have to be serious all the time?

By combining a navy blazer with brightly colored denim, then adding in leopard print flats, this outfit punches up a typical Client Meeting outfit with a little more flair.

It works just as well as a Weekend Chic look, too. Brunch, here you come!

Working mom outfit of the week: Suited up in menswear

By IN Personal Style, Work It Wednesdays

Working mom outfit of the week: Menswear inspired client meeting look

Every few years or so, menswear makes a return to the runways and no wonder; there’s something chic about a woman in a man’s uniform.

Wear It Wednesdays: Working mom outfit photos(Although by now, don’t the blazer and trousers belong to us just as much as the boys?)

Unless your closet is exclusively filled with dresses, you probably have the pieces for a menswear look, too.

All you need are 1 blazer + 1 pair of dress trousers + 1 button-down shirt.

(Bonus points for a necktie or scarf and oxfords or loafers.)

I don’t have any flat shoes that resemble oxfords or loafers, so I went with my more feminine pointed-toe booties.

Instead of a necktie, I opted for a neck scarf. I would tie it differently if I wore this outfit again, though: it looks like the scarf has eaten my neck! (The things you learn from outfit photos …)

  • Fab mamas: Are you a menswear fan?

Blazer: H&M (similar).
Shirt: LOFT (similar).
Trousers: Armani Exchange (similar).
Boots: Aerosoles (similar).

3 ways to build outfits around a classic navy blazer

By IN More Fabulous Fridays

More Fabulous Fridays: Wrap up your work week with a working mom style treatI’ve written a lot about the magic of a great black blazer. But until now, I’ve never owned one in navy blue.

That changed when I saw this outfit ideas post from Refinery 29 that built 3 outfits around a classic, chic and so-inexpensive navy blazer from H&M.

I especially like the weekend look–it’s perfect for a Weekend Chic/Level 2 working mom outfit. I liked it so much, in fact, I tried to recreate it for this week’s outfit post.

(Not a blazer girl? Replace the jacket with a cardigan and try a belt on top. Accessories will do a lot to determine whether the result is still a Level 2 or is more of a Level 1 Weekend Casual look.)

  • Do you have a navy blazer? What’s your favorite way to wear it?

How to recreate an inspiration working mom outfit

By IN Work It Wednesdays

Working mom outfit photo: Blue H&M blazer, gray Gap T-shirt, Habitual denim, leopard flats for a Casual Friday

You never know when outfit inspiration may strike–it could be in real life, in a magazine or (increasingly more often for me) on Pinterest.

Wear It Wednesdays: Working mom outfit photosToday’s outfit inspiration came from a post on the Refinery 29 blog with not one, but three outfit ideas, all created from a single H&M navy blazer.

I pinned the post (see? Pinterest!), thinking I would recreate it at some future time, probably with a black blazer since I didn’t own a navy one yet.

Then I found myself at the mall (the same trip I mentioned last week) and lo and behold, there was the blazer, hanging at the front of H&M–and on sale for $30, no less. I truly am the queen of bargain-priced blazers.

With that piece purchased, I had all of the components I needed. So here’s my attempt at recreating the most casual of the 3 Refinery 29 options.

  • What do you think? Did I get close?

Blazer: H&M, $40.
Denim: Habitual (similar, $99, Amazon).
T-shirt: Gap (similar, $20, ASOS).
Flats: Stuart Weitzman Lastikon ($87, 6pm.com).
