Reader request: Where are the best places to shop for weekend casual clothes?

Where to shop for weekend casual clothes

Sara writes: “Is there a fast and best place to shop for Level 1 clothes?  I would love to go into one store, spend an hour, and leave with a new wardrobe.  What do you recommend?”

How-To Tuesdays: Style advice and answers for working momsOh, how I wish there was a store so wonderful you could pick up an entire wardrobe in just an hour. But you might be able to get pretty close.

The first step is to do a little bit of homework. The more you know about yourself, the better you’ll be able to pick a store or stores to shop at–and the easier your shopping will be once you get there.

Level 1 is Weekend Casual, so that means simple, solid wardrobe basics: T-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts, cardigans.

Within this relatively narrow category, however, there are variations. Answering these questions will help match you to the store or stores that best fit.

The best places to shop for weekend casual clothes

  • Style. Do you have an aesthetic preference?
    • If you want to go more young and trendy, think H&M, Madewell or Abercrombie & Fitch.
    • Sticking to the classics? You can’t go wrong with the Gap, Banana Republic or J. Crew.
    • Looking for a looser, comfort silhouette? Think J. Jill or Coldwater Creek.
    • What about something a bit unusual? Anthropologie might be for you.
  • Silhouette. Do you have particular body shape needs: tall, petite, plus size? (Not sure? Take your measurements.)
    • Tall girls: Look for pants that come in “long” in addition to regular at many of the chains mentioned above.
    • Petite: The same goes for you; chains like LOFT and Talbots also have entire Petites sections.
    • Plus: There are several boutiques for the curvy girl; find them here.
  • Spendiness. Do you have a budget?
    • I want to save: Chains like Old Navy and H&M are made for low-cost staples. Or try mass retailers like Kohl’s and Sears; keep an eye out for coupons, both paper and digital.
    • I’m ready to splurge: If you really want to invest in your staples, Banana Republic and J. Crew are at the upper end of the chain-store spectrum, or try the casuals department in your better department stores like Nordstrom.
    • I’m in between. Everything else above will generally fall in between “no money” and “no worries.”

And if you really want to get in and out as quickly as possible, here are my best tips:

  • Make a list. Which Level 1 items do you need the most? In what colors? What sizes?
  • Enlist help. If you’re willing to shop a bit upscale, take advantage of the personal shopper services at the higher end department stores (like the aforementioned Nordstrom). Be prepared to provide the information on your list in advance, including any brands you prefer. When you show up for your appointment, your shopper will have your items ready and waiting.

Good luck!

Outfit post: Casual mama weekend wear [Level 1]

By IN Personal Style

Working Mom Outfit Level 1: Weekend Casual with cropped denim

Yesterday, I wrote about what to wear for Memorial Day weekend and one of the recommendations was printed capris and a cotton top.

Here’s one version of that particular outfit combo. I don’t have printed denim–although I’m keeping my eyes open for a pattern I really like–but I do have these capris from Calvin Klein.

They’re a nice alternative to shorts when the weather is warm but not hot. (And if you’re fair-skinned like me, it also keeps more of you protected from the sun.)

What do you think of my “formal wear” T-shirt? If men can have one printed with a tuxedo, then we can have one printed with a string of pearls!

I usually opt for my black leather thong sandals with an outfit like this (here’s an example) but I decided to add some color with these turquoise ones from Nine West. I think turquoise works as a neutral, anyway.

What are you wearing this holiday weekend?

T-shirt: Barneys COOP. (similar, $22, American Apparel).
Denim: Calvin Klein (similar, $69.50, Amazon).
Watch: Avon, Paris Chic, $29.
Shoes: Nine West (similar, $44, Amazon)
Working Mom Outfit Level: 1/Weekend Casual

What to wear for Memorial Day weekend

By IN Advice, Personal Style, Work It Wednesdays

What to wear for Memorial Day weekend

Can you believe Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner? Summer’s so close we can almost taste it.

Here’s what to wear to spend the unofficial start of summer in style.

  • Printed capris. Printed denim is one of the biggest trends for spring. What better way to feel fresh and bright for a holiday weekend? If wearing prints on your bottom half isn’t your thing, swap it for colored denim or khakis, another big trend. Capri length will suit most locations where temperatures are rising but not yet summer-hot.
  • Cotton top. You can always go with a classic T-shirt, but what about a fun little cotton top? A simple button-up in a solid color will balance out all that print on the bottom. (If you opted for solid capris, you can either keep the top solid for a little color-blocking, or seek out a summery print. Florals are everywhere this year.)
  • Casual kicks. There’s something so classic about a pair of canvas casual sneakers. You especially can’t go wrong with Keds.
  • Sunglasses. Keep that sun out of your eyes! Fun shades top off any look.
  • Big straw tote. Hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend? Tote your magazines and sunscreen and other odds and ends in a big straw bag. It’s guaranteed to make you feel that much closer to your summer vacation.

Adapt as needed for your climate. If it’s cooler, add a cardigan or hoodie to the ensemble. If it’s warmer, trade out the capris for shorts or the sneakers for sandals.

No matter what your weather, don’t forget the sunscreen!

Outfit post: Level 5 date night

By IN Advice, Personal Style

Level 5, Date Night outfit: Dress, pearls and silver bag and shoes

This week’s outfit post is a demonstration of Level 5 of the 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits–also known as Date Night. (What’s Level 5, you may ask? Just check out yesterday’s post for details.)

For this outfit, I wanted to show how you could use pieces that will transition from office to evening, so I’m wearing the dress from my Level 4 client meeting outfit.

(This dress, by the way, is a perfect example of the “what sizes are you?” phenomenon. I started off by trying on my usual size, an 8, plus one smaller. But because this dress is really only fitted through the bust, where I am decidedly not, er, generously proportioned, both sizes were much too big. I eventually wound up working my way down to a size 2 before it fit me without gapping at the neckline.)

Because this dress sleeveless and V-necked, all I had to do was remove the bolero jacket for instant evening appeal. The multi-strand necklace still works, too; the mixture of the sparkly beads with the pearls reads as less buttoned down.

I could’ve left the kitten heels on, I suppose, but silver shoes and accessories feel more “on the town” to me. I picked both of them up at Payless; when you wear something so infrequently, there’s really no reason to spend much more!

Dress: Ann Taylor. (Similar, $110, Nordstrom)
Shoes: Payless. (Similar, $95, Zappos)
Bag: Payless. (Similar, $39, the Limited)
Necklace: Van Heusen. (Similar, $36, Avon)
Outfit level: 5.

Working Mom Outfits Level 5: Date night

By IN Advice, Personal Style, Style

The 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits: Level 5, Date Night

[This post is part of the series The 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits, where you learn ways to assemble outfits for any situation, whether you’re on the job or on the go.]

If the FDA had a Pyramid diagram for outfits, Level 5 would be in the tippy top. These are the clothes you wear sparingly. We’re talking serious Special Occasion outfits.

We’re talking about Date Night.

Because every mom needs at least one outfit in her closet that’s all about being a woman, a red hot sexy woman. (Trust me, your husband/boyfriend/significant other thinks so, too.)

How to create a Level 5 Working Mom Outfit: Date Night

  • Dress: It’s not absolutely required that you wear a dress on Date Night, but if you’re not going to break out your LBD for this, when are you? Really, any pretty dress is made for this, even if it’s neither little nor black. And if it’s sexy pretty? So much the better. Show a little skin! (Just remember to keep it in balance. Décolleté is sexy. A short skirt is sexy. Décolleté and a short skirt is questionable, taste-wise.)
  • Top: If you are going to forego a dress, now’s your chance to wear something silky, draped, sleeveless, or V-necked. Again, think sexy pretty.
  • Skirt: If it’s a fabric you’d never wear to the office, then it’s perfect for Date Night. If it’s black, it’s perfect for Date Night. If it’s a little on the short side and shows off your smokin’ legs, it’s perfect for Date Night.
  • Pants: No. Seriously. Unless you’re working a YSL Le Smoking look, pants + top doesn’t = Date Night, it = meeting with a client. And that puts you right back at Level 4.
  • Shoes: Heels, heels, heels. How high depends on your personal comfort level, but neither is this the time for a flat, a loafer or a chunky wedge.
  • Accessories: Yes! Sure, pearls will still work here (when can’t you wear pearls?). But so will colorful costume jewelry, sterling silver pendants, chokers, even rhinestones. And if you actually have diamonds? Then by all means, bring your best friends along. This is a great time to break out a little clutch bag, too.

Of course, when accessorized properly, our fancy Date Night clothes are most likely the ones that will serve us for less, er, romantic special occasions: weddings, graduations, awards dinners.

And this isn’t to say, either, that all Date Nights are Level 5 occasions. Sometimes you’re just heading to the local cineplex to watch an R rated movie on an actual movie screen without interruption.

But for all those Level 2 outings we squeeze in from time to time, we deserve at least one that dials it all the way up to 5, don’t you think?

Outfit post: Level 2 weekend chic

By IN Advice, Personal Style

5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits: Level 2 weekend chic

This week’s outfit post is a demonstration of Level 2 of the 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits–also known as Weekend Chic. (What’s Level 2, you may ask? Just check out yesterday’s post for details.)

As I mentioned yesterday, Level 2 is really just a variation on Level 1. A lot of your weekend casual basics can easily be dressed up to create a weekend chic look.

So this outfit shares a couple of pieces with my Level 1 outfit: the black V-neck T-shirt and the little Puma flats. You can’t really see it, but I have on the same small silver chain as well.

I traded the gray hooded sweatshirt for a gray embellished cardigan, and the bootcut Gap jeans for a darker washed pair of premium denim from Paige.

(This is the Hidden Hills cut and let me tell you, it’s a little bit magical. It’s not cut way down low and there’s enough stretch to hug your curves. It’s like jeans with built-in Spanx. So yes, these are expensive jeans but they are worth it!)

I added a belt on top of the cardigan for a little extra visual interest and waist definition and voila! Weekend chic.

Now, where did I put that mimosa?

T-shirt: Mossimo by Target. (Similar, $21, Bluefly)
Cardigan: LOFT. (Similar, $98, Banana Republic)
Denim: Paige Premium Denim Hidden Hills, $189, Zappos.
Shoes: Puma. (Similar, $70, Endless)
Outfit level: 2.
