Packing for a week at the beach is the best kind of packing light: lightweight fabrics, light colors, easy and interchangeable pieces.
This is the time to wear lots of natural fibers, like cotton and linen. They feel great and roll up easily to fit into your suitcase. Summer travel is also a perfect time to incorporate athleisure pieces into your packing list.
Tank tops are an obvious choice for hot summer days, but you could also opt for a cap-sleeve tee if you’d rather not bare so much of your upper arms. And consider a tunic top or two; they’re breezy and easy to slip on top of a swimsuit.
Mix up your shorts wardrobe and your outfits will feel endless: denim and neutral pairs (such as khakis) are obvious choices, then add a fun print or bright color.
If it gets cooler at night or if cloudy days are in the forecast, bring a pair of longer pants, such as Capris.
Pack a sundress or two to do double-duty as oceanfront evening dining wear or daytime swimsuit cover-up. Ditto for leather thong sandals: they’re a nicer alternative to flip flops when the situation calls for fancier footwear.
And no week at the beach is complete without sun defense: a hat with a brim, sunglasses and lots and lots of sunscreen.
What to pack for a week at the beach
- 3-4 cotton tops:
- tank tops or cap-sleeve tees
- tunic top
- 3 pairs of shorts
- neutral or brightly colored
- capri pants—or other cropped style
- flat sandals and flip flops
- beach hat
- 1-2 cotton sundresses
- at least 2 swimsuits in your favorite style
Of course, every beach week packing list should include some fun reading material. I like to mix up my options by loading my Kindle with a range of fiction and non-fiction, then tucking in several print magazines.
